1. Hope - Apocalyptica - (3:25)
Hope is an instrumental piece and it suits this pairing for several reasons. The conflicting music of the cellos plays a big role. We have a hard, almost violent background cello screeching away and a more delicate, heart-stirring cello in the foreground, displaying Kurogane and Tomoyo's conflicting personalities. Also, while Kurogane is going through a number of hardships throughout his journey, there is still a faint glimmer of hope that guides him on his way.
(Instrumental)
2. Fate - Bleak (feat. Ana Johnsson & Kimmo Pohjonen) - (4:22)
This song talks about two lovers separated by space and time -- how they are simultaneously joined and separated by Fate. Past and present lives intertwining, unrequited love, and the need to do what's right, even if it means leaving the one you love the most. Ultimately, this is reason why it suits Kurogane and Tomoyo.
Give me something to return to in your heart
I fear nothing but to leave here without you for life
We were left in this world for each other
But I can't run from the fate I've been fighting for so long
3. Always Know Where You Are - BBMak - (3:19)
This song talks about returning home after a long journey and finally realizing that what you were searching for has been in front of you all along -- because the one guiding you every step of the way was always there. Just as Tomoyo has always been there for Kurogane, guiding him and watching over him throughout his journey.
And I found something that was always there
Sometimes it's got to hurt before you feel
But now I'm strong and I won't kneel
Except to thank who's watching over me
4. Far Away - Nickelback - (3:58)
This song is a song that talks about separation. Have you ever found yourself wishing for one more chance, a chance to make everything right again? Even if you're millions of miles away? You just feel like you have to return and explain yourself... only to find out that there's no need to.
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming
You'll be with me and you'll never go
Stop breathing
If I don't see you anymore
5. Wherever You Will Go - The Calling - (3:27)
This is just one of the songs that immediately has you thinking about a love letter -- not the sappy kind, but the honest, heart-to-heart kind -- and, strangely, I'm sure that Kurogane was thinking along these lines during his journey.
And maybe I'll find out
A way to make it back someday
To watch you, to guide you
Through the darkest of your days
6. Broken - Seether (feat. Amy Lee) - (4:19)
"Broken" talks about not feeling whole when you aren't with the person you care about the most. This is a duet, so it contains both point of views. You want to do whatever you can for that person but you can't when you're separated. But when you find each other again it was worth feeling broken.
The worst is over now and we can breathe again
I wanna hold you high, you steal my pain away
There's so much left to learn, and no one left to fight
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain
7. How Can I Not Love You? - Joy Enriquez - (4:37)
It's hard to love someone when you're not together. And it's even harder to tell yourself to stop loving someone who's not meant to love you back. At least that's the feeling this song gives me. That Tomoyo's willing to sacrifice her feelings for Kurogane for the sake of the greater good.
Must be strong
And we must let go
Cannot say
What our hearts must know
8. Beautiful Disaster - Kelly Clarkson - (4:12)
This is another song in Tomoyo's point of view. She tries to watch over Kurogane and guide him, even though she knows that doing so will cost her. But she's willing to do anything to help him -- even if it means bringing upon her own downfall.
He's magic and myth
As strong as what I believe
A tragedy with
More damage than a soul should see
9. Please Don't Let It Go - HIM - (4:29)
This song talks about the struggles and hardships you have to go through to be with the one you love. There are a number of obstacles in the way, the most prominent of them being death. "Please Don't Let It Go" is a plea to not succumb to death before you have the chance to see each other again -- just like when Kurogane and Tomoyo finally saw each other again -- even if it's for the last time.
We're drifting apart
But I want you to know
Wherever you are, I belong
10. Cure My Tragedy (A Letter To God) - Cold - (3:52)
Kurogane and Tomoyo have known each other since childhood. This song talks about the happy times they spent together back when there was no need to think about the looming future. But the pain of separation and the possibility of losing Tomoyo are more than Kurogane can bear. This song would clearly describe his emotions in such a predicament.
I was never good at hiding anything
My thoughts break me
Do you understand what you mean to me?
You are my faith
11. Keep Your Heart Broken - The Rasmus - (3:56)
This is a song about promises. Promises and vows are sacred and should never be broken. Which is why, even if you're separated from the one you cherish, you should always keep your promises to them. "I will return, without fail." And Kurogane did, didn't he?
Enfolding your love in my heart
By the dawn, I'll be gone
The road keeps us apart
For some time, I'll be gone
12. The Thorn - Leaves' Eyes - (4:04)
This is a song that really fits Kurogane and Tomoyo. On one side, we have Tomoyo who can tell that Kurogane's in some sort of danger, and on the other side we have Kurogane fighting off his enemies. The contrasting vocals and music also fit the setting -- the female vocals are high like Tomoyo's voice would be and the male vocals are brutal and violent, as if Kurogane really is in the midst of a battle.
I hope that he will be safe
Hopefully return in April
I've heard the winds speak of a fight
And it hit my heart like a thorn
13. Somewhere - Within Temptation - (4:15)
"Somewhere" is a song that would surely reflect Tomoyo's feelings during Kurogane's absence. There are many songs about loved ones leaving for battle, but little is said about the ones left behind. And in Tomoyo's case, she did not remain idle. She gave up a great deal in exchange for his welfare. We might never know the true extent of what she had to give up.
Lost in the darkness (darkness)
Try to find your way home
I want to embrace you
And never let you go
14. Her Alone - Amorphis - (6:01)
"Her Alone" was meant to be a song about Kurogane and Tomoyo. There's no other logical explanation why the lyrics in their entirety seem to describe Kurogane's exact feelings for Tomoyo. Certainly, he has vowed to protect her and obey her, but Tomoyo is also the only person he can defy as he wishes to without fearing the consequences.
Her alone I will lend my ear to
Only her will I obey
Her alone I will always want to serve
Only her I will defy
15. One Day - Kamelot - (4:15)
Though it's hard to say goodbye and leave behind the one you care about the most, the desire to return and make everything right doesn't change, no matter what's happened. If you make a promise to return, one day you'll return, simple as that.
Can you remember the morning I told you goodbye?
Just when a new day was dawning, a piece of me died
Somehow I have to try to get used to being alone
If I could only hold you once again I'd never let go
16. Distant Sun - Lacuna Coil - (5:28)
You never really know how much you'll miss someone until the time comes for you to be separated. Only then do you realize how much that person meant to you. The same goes for both Kurogane and Tomoyo. Only when they were separated did they realize just how attached to each other they really were.
And now
Will something happen to me?
How did I lose my guide?
You left me all alone
17. Glades Of Summer - Sirenia - (5:58)
It's a suitable song to end the soundtrack with. The somewhat abstract lyrics fit Tomoyo's personality and point of view. The lyrics instill a hope in the listener, and yet, a sad kind of unavoidable inevitability. The gentle, soothing melody is a startling contrast with the dynamic introduction track "Hope," but still contains that same faint glimmer of hope, even as the music fades away into nothingness.
When the darkness seems to fall
Then I can hear you call
Your voice is clearer now than before
And in the summer rain
I'll carry all your pain
If I could only see you again
